2018 Ford Fusion

Starting Price: $23,090 | Price Yours

Above Average: Nimble in the corners, numerous high tech features, gas, hybrid and plug-in hybrid models, available all-wheel drive

Below Average: Average resale values, upper level trims can get expensive

Consensus: The Ford Fusion mixes practicality, luxury, technology and athleticism in a very versatile package

2018 Ford Focus

Starting Price: $18,825 | Price Yours

Above Average: Fuel economy, pricing, numerous high-tech upgrades, performance-oriented ST, electric model

Below Average: Poor resale value, not much power from base engine, cramped rear seat

Consensus: An affordable compact sedan and hatchback that can be anything from zero-emission transport to tire-scorching fossil fuel burner

The Fusion is a midsize sedan offering a comfortable ride, roomy interior and loads of cool high-tech features. The Focus is like a slightly smaller version of the Fusion, sporty on the outside and handsome on the inside. Both cars offer green alternatives, the Fusion in hybrid and plug-in hybrid form, the Focus as an all-electric vehicle. Both cars can be equipped with powerful turbocharged engines, but only the Fusion offers all-wheel drive (there is an AWD Focus RS, but that’s really a unique vehicle all its own). On the safety front, the Focus doesn’t offer any advanced driver assist features, but does offer rear cross-traffic detection and blind-spot warning. The Fusion can be equipped with adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, as well as exclusive upgrades like inflatable rear seat belts. You’ll find more high-tech features in the Fusion, but the Focus is better equipped than some rivals, offering features like automatic a parallel parking assistant (Active Park Assist) and a Sony audio system. The Focus also offers the choice of a sedan or hatchback, making it a bit more versatile than the sedan-only Fusion.

Ford Fusion Advantages

Wide range of engine options, advanced technology, near-luxury level interior on Platinum trim, available all-wheel drive

Ford Focus Advantages

Enticing base price, powerful ST trim, available electric model, good fuel economy, available manual transmission

The Fusion and Focus share a common design language both inside and out. Both cars can be had with turbocharged engines and both offer green alternatives. The Focus and Fusion offer some unique features not found on other cars such as a keypad locking/unlocking system and Active Park Assist.

Final Recommendation

If you need maximum interior room in a tech-savvy, feature rich sedan, the Fusion is the clear choice. However, if you’re not really concerned with backseat space, the Focus can be nicely equipped for a lot less, and it offers a racy ST version that’s a blast to drive. However, if you want the latest in driver assist features, only the Fusion offers them.
